Portuguese Proficiency Test

As per the norms of Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), the following Portuguese examinations assess the command of aspirants in the Portuguese language:

  • CAPLE (Centro de Avaliação de Português Língua Estrangeira) or Centre for Evaluation of Portuguese as a Foreign Language

  • CIPLE (Certificado Inicial de Português Língua Estrangeira) – officiated by CAPLE

  • Brazilian Portuguese Proficiency Test

What is CAPLE?

CAPLE (Centro de Avaliação de Português Língua Estrangeira) is the official eligibility authenticated by the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in relation to Instituto Camões, to ratify the knowledge of candidates in Portuguese.

To take this exam, students must not be native to Portugal or any other country where the same language is spoken.

Exam levels

The exam has 5 levels.

Level A1: ACESSO – This exam tests the simple communication competence.

Level A2: CIPLE – Initial Certificate of Portuguese foreign language (Certificado inicial de portugues lingua estrangeira)

Level B1: DEPLE – Elementary Diploma of Portuguese Language (Diploma elementar de portugues lingua estrangeira)

Level B2: DIPLE – Intermediate Diploma of Portuguese Language (Diploma intermedio de portugues lingua estrangeira)

Level C1: DAPLE – Advanced Diploma of Portuguese Language (Diploma avancado de portugues lingua estrangeira)

Level C2: DUPLE – University Diploma of Portuguese Language (Diploma universitario de portugues lingua estrangeira)

CAPLE Exam Pattern
This exam comprises of 4 sections:

Reading Comprehension – Candidates should be able to understand topics based on everyday conversation.
  • This section counts 20% of the total.
  • Duration: 20 minutes.
  Production and Interaction Written – In this section of the exam, students are familiar with filling forms and entering information about themselves.
  • This part holds 15% of the test.
  • Duration: 20 minutes.
  Listening Comprehension – In this part, candidates should be able to understand conversations related to public and private concerns.
  • This part of the test accounts for 35% of the total.
  • Duration: 25 minutes.
  Oral Production and Interaction – In this section, candidates must know how to interact. Students are required to participate in conversations on matters concerned with private and public events with the examiner.
  • Duration: 10-15 minutes individually.

The CAPLE examinations are held in the months of May, July, and November at various testing centers.

The CAPLE exams are held in August, February, September, October, and March in Lisbon only.

NOTE: Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, the dates of the examination are not yet declared.
